Weather creates problems for the Whitehaven Classic
By The Commercial Appeal
Memphis - Saturday’s Whitehaven Classic ran into all sorts of problems due to high temperatures in the afternoon and lightning during the evening. The tripleheader was supposed to begin at 3 p.m. with Mitchell and Hillcrest matching up at Whitehaven Stadium. But, with a heat index over 104 degrees, the kickoff had to be pushed back. Once it was clear that the heat index was going to remain too high, MIAA officials canceled the Mitchell-Hillcrest game. They hoped that would allow them to play both the Fairley-Westwood and Whitehaven-Hamilton games, but lightning in the area twice forced the Fairley-Westwood game to be halted. The delays caused officials to move the Whitehaven-Hamilton game to Monday night.
Shortly after 11 p.m. the Fairley-Westwood game finally ended, with the Bulldogs prevailing 28-6.
